Study closely the occurance of various forms of wear, in order to understand and predict the wheel-rail wear mechanisms. Analyzing the current state of research on wheel-rail contact, specifically used in metro rail systems, based on theoretical and experimental research outlined in the literature, the present thesis deals with the: 1. Determination of surface contact geometry for free-wheel axle, and griving wheel axle during braking on straight and curved track. 2. Determination and analytical representation of the rails and wheels profile of the metro. Analytical Determination of the thermal region of metro wheels. 3. Mathematical modeling of wear process of the wheel when travelling along curved and straight track - Thermomechanical wear, - Wear by oxidation 4. Determination of adhesion "identityr" in wheel-rail contact. 5. Contamination on the contact wheel-rail adhesion. 6. Defining the coefficient of concentration of tensions in the wheel contact areas travelling along curves. 7. Determination of load bearing capacity of the wheel in terms of wear. 8. Determination of surface fatigue durability of the wheel for a complete run cycle, based on the specific geometry of the Athens Metro rails. 9. Experiments on the tribological wheel-rail coupling, in real conditions of operation, depending on the combined gross tonnage (TB) recorded, indicating the development of wheel and rail profiles. 10. Solutions for optimising the durability of the free-wheel and driving wheel used in metro cars
