Abstract: UNIVERSITY”POLITEHNICA” OF BUCHAREST FACULTY OF TRANSPORTS THE Ph.D THESIS ABSTRACT Contributions to improving the comfort and stability of road vehicles by optimizing suspension damping characteristics Scientific leader: Prof. Ph.D Eng. Eugen Mihai Negruş, Eng. Ciprian Tabacu The rate of travel extension given by the building-up of horsepower motor and the falling of the streamlined multiplier has asserted an expansion of the active safety too, namely of the steadiness, manageability and comfort, being mainly achieved by means of improving the suspension dampers’ performances and its optimization characteristics in terms of the vehicle’s purpose and the road type that the vehicle will be worked on. The paper presents the ¼ M model (quarter car) but also distinctive equations and concrete outcomes for a couple of running conditions, acquired by simulation in Matlab-Simulink and ADAMS allowing advanced optimisation of the suspension in order to reach target parameters of the stability and comfort. Likewise, in the paper are also studied the damping constructive solutions used for the passive, semi-active and active suspensions, as well as their operating mode. The paper frames to study the keys for the active and passive dampers in addition to the simulation methods for improving the vehicles’ comfort and stability by: The definition of standards that dissipative characteristics have to carry out towards the improvement of stability and comfort performances and proposals of such characteristics relative to the standard ones; Practical solutions of control valves that will provide these improved characteristics; Simulations in Matlab-Simulink software, on ¼ models and ½ vehicle, having two and 4 grades of play, in order to show how vehicles behave to vertical vibrations of roll axis and pitch; Simulations in ADAMS software, on ¼ models, vehicle having 2 grades of play on optimization of dissipative characteristics.
