Abstract: Computer-Based Support and Feedback for Collaborative Chat Conversations and Discussion Forums Suport și feedback asistat de calculator pentru conversații chat și forumuri de discuții folosite în scop educațional Scientific Advisor / Coordonator științific Ştefan Trăuşan-Matu, Ph.D. Ph.D. Candidate / Doctorand Traian Eugen Rebedea With the wide adoption of instant messaging, online discussion forums, blog post and comments and social networking (status updates, comments, etc.), online communication started to switch from narratives to highly-collaborative conversations with multiple authors and parallel discussion threads. However, the theories used for analyzing this new type of discourse, that is very different from narratives, but also from dialogues between two persons, have remained in essence the same. The thesis introduces a new methodology that uses inter-animation for the analysis of online conversations with multiple authors and that is based on detecting the implicit links that arise between turns using only Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques. During the development of this methodology several existing theories for discourse analysis have been used. Some of them have been designed especially for dialogues, but others can also be used for narrative texts. In our work, they are used mainly to highlight the implicit links existing in online discussions. Thus, a conversation graph is built which can be used for determining the discussion threads and for an improved analysis of the conversations. The inter-animation framework for online conversations had been partially implemented for PolyCAFe, a system for analyzing chat conversations and discussion forums, developed within the FP7 project Language Technologies for Lifelong Learning (LTfLL). As illustrated in the thesis, it has been designed for the analysis of online conversations of students involved in Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) activities. Besides a detailed description of the implemented system, several validation experiments are presented that prove the usefulness and efficiency of the software for the students and tutors that are using it. Furthermore, quite a few experiments have been undertaken to determine the accuracy of the results offered by the system and the main results are discussed in the final chapters. As the main elements of novelty within PolyCAFe are related to the semantic layer of linguistic analysis, at the end of the thesis are presented the results of two experiments that use semantics in order to improve the relevance of text documents in two different contexts: improving web documents ranking for search engines and improving the comments ranking on websites with video materials, such as YouTube. Pe măsură ce mesageria instantanee (chat), forumurile de discuții online, postările și comentariile pe blog-uri, precum și rețelele sociale (prin modificări de statusuri, comentarii, etc.) au devenit adoptate la scară largă, comunicația online a început să treacă de la texte narative la conversații colaborative cu autori multipli și fire de discuție evoluând în paralel. Cu toate acestea, teoriile folosite pentru analiza acestui tip nou de discurs, care este foarte diferit de textul narativ, dar și de dialogul între două persoane, au rămas în esență aceleași. Teza introduce o nouă metodologie bazată pe inter-animație pentru analiza conversațiilor online cu mai mulți autori care pleacă de la detectarea legăturilor implicite care apar între replici folosind tehnici de Prelucrare a Limbajului Natural (PLN). În cadrul dezvoltării acestei metodologii au fost folosite și adaptate câteva dintre teoriile existente pentru analiza discursului. Unele dintre acestea au fost concepute special pentru dialoguri, dar altele pot fi folosite și pentru texte narative. În cadrul teoriei propuse, ele sunt folosite în special pentru a evidenția diferite tipuri de legături implicite existente în discuții online. În felul acesta se construiește un graf al conversației care poate fi folosit pentru determinarea firelor de discuție și pentru o analiză îmbunătățită a conversațiilor. Modelul inter-animării pentru conversații online a fost implementat parțial în cadrul PolyCAFe, un sistem pentru analiza conversațiilor chat și a forumurilor de discuții, care a fost dezvoltat în cadrul proiectului PC7 Language Technologies for Lifelong Learning (LTfLL). Așa cum este detaliat în cadrul tezei, sistemul a fost conceput pentru a analiza conversațiile online ale studenților care participă în activități de tip Învățare Colaborativă Sprijinită de Calculator (Computer Supported Collaborative Learning – CSCL). Pe lângă descrierea detaliată a implementării sistemului, sunt prezentate și mai multe experimente de validare care dovedesc utilitatea și eficiența acestui produs software pentru studenții și tutorii care îl folosesc. Mai mult, au fost întreprinse și câteva experimente pentru a determina acuratețea rezultatelor oferite de sistem, iar princialele rezultate sunt discutate în capitolele finale. Deoarece principalele elemente de noutate ale PolyCAFe sunt legate de procesările semantice din cadrul analizei lingistice, în finalul prezentei teze sunt prezentate rezultatele a două experimente care folosesc semantica pentru a îmbunătăți relevanța documentelor text online în două contexte diferite: îmbunătățirea clasificării documentelor web întoarse de motoarele de căutare și dezvoltarea unei metode de ordonare a comentariilor pentru situri web cu materiale video, precum YouTube.
