Contribuţii teoretice şi experimentale privind realizarea unei noi clase de senzori pentru evaluarea deformaţiilor mecanice

Abstract: The current PhD thesis is dealing with a sensory system for evaluating small and very small mechanical deformations, by proposing an original measuring method based on embedding a photonic crystal inside the core of an optical fiber. For two particular cases, the system has been characterized with respect to its geometry, materials, as well as light’s propagation modes. For determining the parameters of the novel class of optical sensors, we have used dedicated numerical programs for solving Maxwell’s equations (for light propagation inside regular and transparent dielectric materials). Large stair-step variations of the phase (of the electromagnetic fields) have been identified for very small variations of the dimensions characterizing the novel class of proposed, designed, and simulated sensors. Possible applications of this novel class of sensors include real-time evaluation of mechanical deformations inside buildings, dams, roads, bridges, etc. Additionally, due to their ultra-small dimensions and ultra-high sensitivities, such sensors could be integrated inside Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuits, or in micro/nano-opto-mechanical (MOEM/NOEM) ones for evaluating not only mechanical deformations, but temperature, pressure and even bio-chemical parameter variations as well.
