Abstract: Over the last few decades, extensive work has been carried out for utilizing radiation technologies for environmental remediation. Reporting on the development of radiation sources to be applied mostly concerns high power electron beam machines. The technologies has to be competitive with conventional ones, both from economic and technical points of view. Therefore, any development concerning cost reduction and technological improvements plays a very important role for further process implementation. The main original idea of this doctoral dissertation is to combine the efficacy of the electron beams (ionizing radiation) and the special characteristics of microwaves (non-ionizing radiation) in order to reduce the required electron beam dose level and irradiation time to a minimum and to save the cost of ionizing radiation in the environmental protection field. This idea was suggested by the observation that both, accelerated electron beams and microwaves, in their separate passage through matter, produce by different physical action principles, the same final effects, such as: polymerization, food preservation, degradation of pollutants in air or water, disinfection of sewage sludge, etc. In order to investigate this method, several original installations which permit separate, successive and simultaneous microwave and electron beam irradiation were carried out. The original combined irradiation reactors as well as the original associated microwave injection systems are described. Using this method and the realized installations, there were accomplished experiments for developing of some original technologies for environmental depollution, namely: acid gases and volatile organic compounds reduction from industrial gases, potable and waste water treatment with polyelectrolytes obtained by irradiation and biologic waste sterilization. Some representative results, which demonstrate the utility of combined electron beam and microwave irradiation method, are presented.
