Abstract: Theoretical and experimental contributions to the use of genetic algorithms in telecommunications - Ph.D. Thesis abstract - There is a permanent concern for identifying and applying new methods and procedures leading to better results and solving certain application problems in the telecommunications domain. Genetic algorithms are used in the IT domain as part of strategies for solving specific problems, but also as computational models for natural evolutionary systems. The thesis presents the results of detailed studies on using genetic algorithms within specific applications in the telecommunications domain. The thesis also includes a chapter containing detailed description of the genetic algorithms and the presentation of other genetic algorithms applications in the telecommunications domain. The first proposed application deals with identifying the PN families with good correlation properties by using genetic algorithms. Compared to Gold codes, the advantages of the identified sequences reside in the correlation performance and also in the fact that, unlike Gold codes, there can be generated sequences of any length. The performances of cross correlation are similar to the ones for Kasami codes. The possibility of using genetic algorithms in optimizing the OVSF tree structures it is also analyzed in the thesis. The performance of this strategy is assessed by the blocking probability values. The goal of this research is to identify the needed resources for the genetic algorithm (input parameters) in order to obtain minimum values of the blocking probability. Within the proposed strategy for OVSF allocation/reallocation each random cod request is treated with genetic algorithms during a settled number of generations, thus obtaining better results compared to deterministic allocation methods. Dynamic package routing ends the series of the genetic algorithms applications presented within the thesis. The possibility of using the genetic algorithms for optimal routes identification in a generic packet switching network it is assessed in this context. In the same time the influence of using subpopulations on the processing time needed for identifying an optimal configuration of the network it is studied. A strategy of dealing with traffic congestion it is also proposed: using genetic algorithms different network configuration can be chosen so that the congested traffic routes to be replaced. The obtained results in this research activity confirm the possibility of using the genetic algorithms within specific applications in telecommunications domain and encourage, in the same time, the future research for improving them. The identified applications can be considered as starting points in developing complex information systems for telecommunications.
