Abstract: Contributions regarding the tribological study of the rail-wheel contact with applications in the railway field The Abstract of the Doctoral Dissertation The study of the rail-wheel contact also requires a thorough investigation of this contact from a tribological point of view, simulating rolling and slipping and quantifying the resulting effects by measuring the wears. Knowing the mechanisms of the appearance of different forms of wear closely, but also of the appearance of the specific types of defects, leads to the mastery and predictability of a good functioning of this system. The deciding element, both in starting the doctoral studies and setting the objectives of this dissertation, was the attempt to explain the series of factors and circumstances which triggered the appearance of some extremely severe wears and defacements, visible at the rails and the wheels of the underground train frames, soon after putting the new underground train frames into running at the underground from Bucharest. This dissertation envisages the following objectives: establishing the geometry of the contact surface for railways and the wheels of the railway vehicles and the analytic representation of the profiles of the rails and wheels; establishing the adherence and the effect of contamination upon the adherence at the contact between wheel and rail; establishing the bearing capacity of the rail under load and establishing the endurance of the rail at superficial fatigue; the qualitative explanation regarding the change in size and direction of the cracks in the rolling plane with slipping, and also providing solutions on how to achieve a higher resistance of the rails in the curved areas of the railways. This dissertation presents the way in which these objectives have been achieved and describes the solutions. By establishing and anticipating the mass lost through wear and, implicitly, by establishing the evolution of the wears at the main parts of the tribological wheel-rail system, one can establish a new approach in projecting and creating the profiles of the wheel and of the rolling way, an approach that could involve a minimum level of wear, a new way of establishing the timetable for correction fixing and/or for replacements, but also the possibility of preventing and explaining some defects which appear in the running at the rolling way and/or at the wheels of the railway vehicles.
