Abstract: UNIVERSITY POLITEHNICA BUCHAREST Faculty of Applied Chemistry and Materials Science NEW BIOMEDICAL ZIRCONIUM-BASED ALLOYS AND PROTECTIVE COATINGS FOR IMPLANTS USED IN ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY Author: Eng. Ioan Viorel BRÂNZOI Bucharest 2011 Biomaterials are natural or artificial materials used in the development of structures or implants to replace diseased or lost biological structure and to reconstruct the shape and function. Currently, materials used for these applications are stainless steel 316L, Co-Cr alloys and Ti alloys. Unfortunately, these materials tended to fail after prolonged use due to various reasons such as high value of modulus of elasticity compared to that of bone, low resistance to wear and corrosion and lack of biocompatibility. Zirconium alloys are the latest materials used in orthopedic surgery, hip replacement and knee joints. These alloys possess a number of excellent properties such as low specific weight, high resistance to corrosion and abrasion and good biocompatibility, which calls for the applications mentioned above. Another special feature of these alloys is the absence of toxic ions in their composition. Thus, after the corrosion processes inside the human body, these alloys do not release toxic ions such as Ni, Cr, V, Al and Co. Metal surface coating is achieved due to the need to improve surface properties, such as corrosion resistance, mechanical and tribological properties and, last but not least, biocompatibility. Also, one can not overlook the economic aspect, which involves the maintenance of cheap and easy to process materials in manufacturing technologies implants for total joint replacements, improving their surface properties. The thesis comprises 13 chapters, of which six chapters form the study of literature, six chapters forming part of original contributions and a chapter devoted to original contributions and findings.
